Life Savers: Teacher, Nurse, Klein PD Officers Honored at August Board Meeting

During the August Board of Trustees meeting, four heroic Klein ISD employees were honored for their quick thinking and swift action in saving a student’s life. 

“It is my honor to recognize teacher Ciara Prothro-Rogers, Nurse Lynsey Duffy, Senior Officer Ileana Perez, and Officer Daniel Kalbow of Klein Cain High School for their recent quick-thinking, courageous, and lifesaving act of service to one of our Klein ISD students, Ronald Yousse,” Klein ISD Chief of Police Marlon Runnels said. 

When Klein ISD student Ronald Yousse started experiencing a health crisis in Ms. Ciara Protho-Roger's classroom in June of 2024, the educator sprang into action that would ultimately save his life. 

Once notified, Nurse Duffy and Officer Kalbow swiftly initiated life-saving procedures while Senior Officer Perez managed communications and documentation when Ronald collapsed at his desk and became unconscious. The team responded with immediate medical attention, including CPR and rescue breaths. 

“Their bravery is an inspiration for our community, demonstrating the true spirit of putting others before oneself,” Chief Runnels said. “In addition to these heroes, a safety team from Klein Cain quickly responded to support and ensure the safety of this very scary situation. Thankfully, the child’s life was saved.” 

In addition to CPR and rescue breaths, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) indicated the severity of the situation, and the team utilized their training to deliver necessary defibrillation shocks. Their relentless determination led to the student regaining a pulse and beginning to breathe again.
